With generous funding from
the Montana Department of Justice's Natural Resource Damage Program (NRDP), WEN
is presenting the Milltown Dam Education Program (MDEP) to 5th through 8th grade
students throughout the Clark Fork Watershed. WEN Staff developed inquiry-based
student lesson about the historic removal of the Milltown Dam. For more information,
or to participate in the MDJP, please call the WEN office at (406) 541-9287 or email:
milltown @ montanawatershed.org.
Watch the WEN website for
spring newsletter and teacher and student materials.
How it began:
WEN launched the MDEP in
fall of 2005 to expose local students to the historic removal, remediation, and
restoration of the Milltown Dam and Reservoir. The MDEP was developed using information
supplied by local resource experts Dave Schmetterling (Montana Fish, Wildlife and
Parks), Chris Brick (Clark Fork Coalition), Peter Nielsen (Missoula City/County
Health Department), Kathy Coleman and Doug Martin (MT NRDP), Russ Forba and Diana
Hammer (EPA), Keith Large, Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and
Matt Vincent (CFWEP).
Special thanks to former
MDEP Coordinator (and present board member) Sara McComas for her diligent work in
program coordination and grant-writing. An additional thank you goes to Jeani Adams,
our Milltown Dam Education Program Instructor, for her great work on the 2007-2008
curriculum.
